Tracking force is the most consequential number in vinyl: the entire weight of the arm's downforce funnels through a diamond a few microns wide, riding in a groove 25 microns deep. Get it wrong in either direction and the record pays.
Too heavy: the slow grind
Excess force pushes the stylus harder into the groove wall — accelerated wear on both diamond and vinyl, and eventually groove deformation on favorite records. The error is gradual and linear: 3 g instead of 2 g is 50% more wear per play. Collectors inherit this damage from the 1970s (when "more weight = better tracking" folklore ruled) and hear it as dull, flattened highs on used copies.
Too light: the violent error
The counterintuitive one: under-tracking is worse than over-tracking. Too little force and the stylus bounces, mistracks, and rides the groove on its corners — gouging rather than gliding. Distortion, skipping, and permanent groove damage follow. "Featherlight to protect records" destroys them faster than honest weight.
The method
- Find the spec range (this database, or the cartridge sheet) — e.g., 1.8–2.2 g.
- Buy a digital gauge ($15) — set the midpoint (2.0 g). Counterweight dial rings are approximations.
- Set anti-skate to match.
- Listen and adjust ±0.1 g: mistracking/sibilance → add weight; dullness → try lighter. Stay in range.
- Re-check monthly — counterweights drift.
Stylus shape changes the math
Conical styli (round tip) track heavier by design; line-contact profiles (MicroLine, Shibata) spread contact over more groove wall and run lighter within their ranges. Never compare forces across shapes — a 1.0 g MC with a line contact can be gentler on records than a 2.0 g conical, or harsher if misaligned. The spec sheet is the truth; the midpoint is the start; the ear is the referee.
